Capel St Mary Bowls Club

History

Our Bowls Club was formed in the late 70’s. G” Ferrari, Charlie Goddard, Brian & Beryl Kidd, Bob & Margaret Tunbridge and Vi & Wally Weaver were primarily responsible for the early work and administration. The construction of the Green was a long struggle. The initial Green Contractor failed to complete the job and a new Contractor had to rescued the project, but this led to two years delay before the Green reached a reasonable standard. When it came to the erection of the Club Pavilion (formerly a chicken hut!!) the founder members received help not only from some of the younger members of the club, but also skilled tradesmen in the village who gave their time to help the Club progress. During the past 25 years, members have worked hard on refurbishing the structure and developed other Club’s facilities including a toilet, basic kitchen facilities, storage huts, improvements to the green surroundings, the installation of the automatic watering system and recently the construction of new perimeter fencing.

Over the years our Club of just over 50 members have enjoyed success in winning a number of Divisional Championships and County Charity Cups and in 1987 carried off the County Junior Cup. Some Members have been successful in competitions at League, Area and County levels with one Ladies Triple reaching the National Finals in 1996 following victory in the County Championship . Members have also regularly been selected to represent their Leagues in Inter-League events.
