LATEST NEWS
March 2008
The new season is fast approaching and our
appetites were whetted on 9th February when we challenged
Mid-Suffolk Indoor Bowls Club to a friendly match at Stowmarket.
The overall result, with Capel winning on four of the seven
rinks and by 139 shots to 109 shots, was excellent. Everyone
had a very enjoyable afternoon, so thanks to John Band for
working hard to arrange this. This well supported event looks
set to become an annual challenge now. Thanks also to the
social committee for getting our social calendar underway
on 26th January with an enjoyable quiz night, kindly hosted
by Tony and Liz Gulliver. Now why is it that the highest scoring
round was the 1950’s?
Turning now to the outdoors season, it’s
time to look out the equipment and look forward to building
on last year’s successes, hopefully with better weather.
Our Greenkeeper, Terry O’Hara, Neville Rumsey and a
small team of helpers have worked hard throughout the winter
to ensure that our green is in tip top condition, not helped
this year by the very mild, wet conditions. Our first league
game is on Monday 5th May and fixtures for this season appear
in other sections of this web site. Please ensure that you
enter your availability in the book provided as soon as possible,
especially for early games. There is good news later in the
Season when Capel will be hosting the Samford League finals
on 14th September.
SMOKING. At a recent committee meeting it
was agreed that this season we would actively discourage anyone
from smoking within the Bowls Green open area as well as in
the buildings. Members are asked to note this and set a good
example for our visitors. Also the weekly variation of rink
settings by colour code will also be discontinued. Each team
will be allocated a rink setting to use every home game, and
in this way should be able to get to know their allocated
rinks better.
THINKING OF TAKING UP BOWLS BUT NEVER
PLAYED?
We are always delighted to welcome new members of all ages
(we have members aged from 16 to 90!). Why not come along
on a club night, held most Fridays from 25th April, and give
it a try? We can usually put our hands on equipment for you
to use and you will be made most welcome. Call our club secretary
John Wright (311009) first, or if you want more information.
