The new season got off to a great start.
First in our calendar was the green tidy-up day which was
attended by over twenty members. Thanks to everyone who lent
a hand and got our green and club buildings into such good
shape. Next, on Saturday 26th April, the warmest day so far
this year, Lew Dyer took the first honours of the season by
winning our first club event, the Bailey Trophy. Congratulations
to George Wiseman (runner-up) and Dave Hall (third) and to
all members who made this such a successful event.
The league season got off to a good start,
with fine weather and excellent bowling conditions. The ‘A’
team lost their first game of the season in the Monday night
Samford League (1 ½ – 5 ½ ) away to a
good Norbridge Reds squad, despite winning on one rink and
drawing on another. This was followed by another defeat away
to Bourne Vale. However this was a good performance as we
rarely take much from this venue and we won on two rinks and
drew on one, losing overall to a heavy defeat on just one
rink (2 ½ – 4 ½ ).
Our ‘B’ team started well in
the Samford League, beating St. John’s RUC by 5 –
2 at home. It was so nearly 6 – 1 but with scores tied
at 15 – 15 on one rink, and with just one end remaining,
the opposition took the game by just one wood.
In the Ipswich & District League, the
‘A’ team had a good start, beating Ipswich Hospitals
away 5 – 2 followed by a home win against Gipping Valley
where we won on three rinks and managed a draw on the last
end on the other.. The ‘B’ team lost at home to
Kesgrave Greens 2 – 5, but by just three shots overall,
winning on two rinks and going down by just one shot on another.
The ‘A’ team also got off to
a good start in the Wednesday Ipswich & District Triples
League, beating a strong Stowupland squad 5 – 2 at home.
The ‘B’ team lost heavily however, away to Eastern
Electricity (1 – 6). Well done to Jim Ross, Malcolm
Blazey and David Kent for winning on their rink to salvage
something from the match.
Finally May 11th saw another successful social
event, in glorious weather, with sixteen members competing
for the Capel Social Club Trophy. Winners Val Haugh and Mark
Vertigans took the trophy and were the only pair to win all
of their games. Well done, and thanks to John and Jean Hines
for organising the event.
