Having been promoted last year to Division ‘A’ of the Monday night Samford League, the ‘A’ team are finding out just how tough this league is, losing three of their first four matches and sitting near the bottom of the league table. The home match against Bealings Blues was a casualty of the weather and has been postponed until Friday 4th July. However there was an encouraging win away at Suffolk Police Lions (5-2). This so nearly could have been 6-1 but on one rink we were 13-12 up with one end remaining, which we lost by two to go down 14-13. In Division E the ‘B’ team have played four and won three, losing heavily to East Bergholt Swifts. The match against Chantry Wrens was abandoned after just a few ends due to the wet weather and must be rearranged. However we just scraped a result against Ipswich & District (4-3) losing on three rinks but winning well on the remaining one thanks to Malcolm Blazey, Dave Hall and Martin Woodward. This raises a point of debate especially for newer members. The current scoring system means that a team can win on three rinks yet still lose the match overall. Is this fair? What alternative would be fairer?

In Tuesday’s Ipswich & District Division C, the ‘A’ team have won three from four and are second to Marlborough Green in the league, with both teams on 19 points. Having won our first game, we beat Gipping Valley, winning on three and drawing on one rink. This was followed by a narrow defeat at Sproughton, losing by just two shots overall (2-5), but we bounced back to beat Stone Lodge, winning on two rinks and drawing on one. In Thursday’s Division G the ‘B’ team have struggled to find any form and are at the foot of the table, having lost all four matches to date, going down away at Delta (1.5-5.5), at home to Chantry Wrens by a similar margin and away to East Bergholt Seagulls (1 – 6).

The ‘A’ team continued their good start on Wednesdays in Division B of the Ipswich & District Triples League, beating Rushmere St. Andrew away by 5 woods overall (6-1) in a close match where the margin on each rink was 3 shots or less. This was followed by a 6-1 home win against Westgate Ward, but a 2 – 5 defeat away at Combs Ford means that it’s now played four, won three. In Division E the ‘B’ team have won just one from four. They did well to bounce back from their first defeat by Eastern Electricity, by beating Martlesham by 7 shots at home (6-1). However they lost heavily at Felixstowe and Walton (0 – 7) and also lost against Sproughton A, falling short by just 3 shots overall (2 – 5).

We made an excellent start in the Stan Wright Cup, comprehensively beating Bramford by 51 shots overall. Unfortunately the Junior Cup was postponed due to heavy rain. Some of our members are making good progress in County competitions – John Wright (men’s singles), Elaine Wright (ladies singles), John & Elaine Wright (mixed pairs), Carol Warrington & Neville Rumsey (mixed pairs), Carol Howe and Elaine Wright (ladies pairs). Well done all and lets see Capel in some finals!

On the social front, we sadly had to postpone the Mall Wood Insurance Trophy event due to low numbers. However, a Coaching Day on 7th June went ahead despite atrocious weather, and all agreed that this was very worthwhile. Four County Coaches put us through our paces, including video replays of our individual bowling actions, and left us with some useful ideas for practice sessions on our Club nights. Many thanks to John & Elaine Wright for organising the day and catering so well for us.
